Q. rubra, is a medium sized, deciduous tree with a rounded to broad-spreading, often irregular crown. Lobed, dark green leaves are sharply pointed at the tips. Autumn brings a hue change to a brownish-red. Insignificant flowers in separate male and female catkins appear in spring. Acorns appear in early fall on mature trees. Grow in deep, fertile, well-drained soil. A fast growing spreading deciduous tree. Requires lime free soil.
