Prunus can be deciduous or evergreen trees or shrubs with showy flowers in spring, and often good autumn foliage colour. Some have edible fruit in autumn, and a few species have ornamental bark. 'Royal Burgundy' is a vigorous tree, narrowly upright at first, then spreading, with reddish-black leaves, deep coppery red when young, and turning orange and scarlet in autumn. Clusters of double, pink flowers appear with or just before the leaves in mid-spring.
