Prunus can be deciduous or evergreen trees or shrubs with showy flowers in spring, and often good autumn foliage colour. Some have edible fruit in autumn, and a few species have ornamental bark. A medium-sized tree with gorgeous clusters of white blossoms, Prunus avium is one of Ireland’s most attractive native ornamental trees. Tart but edible cherries are produced after the flowers, making this tree an important specimen for many insects and birds. Its foliage is green and will explode into lovely Autumn colours, from vivid red to bright orange to golden yellow. Plant in full sun to partial shade in well-drained neutral to acidic soil in a sheltered location.
