A large, handsome specimen, nigra has gracefully arching canes that are initially pale-green but will darken with age, first to a dark brown and finally to a jet black. It will grow quickly, forming clumps ideal for hedging or screening. Its foliage is small but abundant, forming a dappled canopy over the striking stems. While it can be planted in most well-drained soils, nigra does not tolerate coastal conditions or harsh exposure.
